Honda ST1100 CD/Radio fitment
The replacement LHS fairing pocket is GBP 20.00 (plus VAT @ 17.5%) from SONIC (CLICK HERE for contacts/parts page). A standard DIN car-type stereo will fit in it perfectly (minus any superfluous front-end surround/facia plate). However, to fit it, you need to hack at the grey plastic pocket hiding beneath the existing rubber cover, to make the require space for the new pocket to fit - one very sharp Stanley knife, or hacksaw, required!
It comes complete with a hinged plastic lid (option of "Translucent" or "Solid" - mine's "Translucent", so that I can see the radio through it) and a rubber cover (with exit hole for wires etc) for the bottom of the radio, but the bulk of the radio is exposed, so you will need to cover it with something waterproof. For the moment, I have merely wrapped it in plasticised parcel tape, though I have a spare pair of cheap waterproof over-trousers that I will cut up to fit it more 'professionally'. There are securing brackets at each end of the pocket, which exactly lined up with the holes on my ALPINE CD/Radio, though you have to secure these, and the wiring, and the cover, before securing the whole lot in place with the two screws on the top of the new 'pocket' (see 2 shiny Allen bolts in picture - the originals were just screws so I’ve replaced them).
However, due to the standard depth of a car radio these days, you'll need to take a hack-saw to the LHS fillet/inspection panel. If you look closely at one of the pictures on the previous page, at the LHS engine cover, where the 'scoop' of the panel is, you may be able to make out the rubber sleeve on the bottom of the radio. This is where the 'scoop' has had be cut away, from the inside, to allow the necessary room for the radio. However, from the outside, after the job's finished, it's not noticeable anyway, and it's only a five-minute job with a hacksaw, as the panel's only plastic.
As for CD/Radio itself, because of the rigours of a bike jumping around, it's worth checking them in the shop to see which, if any, will accept and eject a CD when VERTICAL, as well as actually play, as they're usually designed to be HORIZONTAL in a car! Mine's an ALPINE at GBP 200 and, apart from a few skips on bumpy/local roads (when I have to resort to Radio only), the CD works a treat! Fairing pocket and radio... FM Radio antenna... I do 130 miles per day, of which 120 is on motorways, which is why I opted for the CD/Radio. I know of another guy who originally took the Tape/Radio option, but had a lot of problems with tapes jamming, so upgraded to CD. Alternatively, 'boot-mounted' CD changer is possible, either in the panniers, or top-box, but you're talking about more wiring, and extra fiddling at the back end too, to rig that up!
SONIC are also the people who do the Hazard Warning / Rear Fog Light set-up, again for Police/Paramedic specials. You can have just the Hazards, or both. I got both, at GBP 120.00 (plus VAT, delivery, etc), which includes the full wiring loom, relays, lights, bulb, HONDA switches, and very easy-to-follow instructions. Again, given the mileage I do, I considered it all but vital for MY bike, but it's not cheap! But, compared to others attempts, with make-do switch gear, it looks the part!
Any queries, feel free to email me, else tell me anything particular you want to 'see' and I will take a digi-picture of it, and add it to the web, else just email it to you. Also, if these notes need expanding in any way, please let me know, and I will add additional information. If/when I get the chance, I will add detailed digi-piccies to clarify the exact fitment.
